“Lies Are Good for You” opens by interrogating one of culture’s favorite fairy tales: that love arrives pure, blissful, and self-explanatory. The narrator asks what love is made of and does not like the lab results.
The song’s scandalous thesis is that lies can be useful because truth is not always kind enough to keep a person alive. Lies pass as art, dress up heartbreak, and create temporary shelter where love refuses to be real.
What keeps the song from becoming simple bitterness is its awareness of performance. Aaron knows the narrator is selling poison as medicine, but he also knows people line up for it every day. Romance is already a theater. The liar merely admits there is a stage.
